A friend gave me these cuttings and said they are Japanese honeysuckle. Is that right? And is this an acceptable plant for a large garden, or is it an invasive plant?

Thank you. It looks to be a very attractive climber. I’m glad I kept the cuttings. They’re growing fast.
(Good to hear from you Owdboggie. Hope you and Mrs. Boggie are Ok.)

I would advise not trying to grow honeysuckle japonica. I've been trying to eradicate it from my garden for 15 years. It's highly invasive. You will never get rid of it - the bane of gardeners.
Three varieties I would highly recommend are Coral Honeysuckle, Lonicera Etrusca & John Clayton Honeysuckle. These are well behaved. fragrant & favored by hummingbirds. Do you have hummingbirds in the UK?

No, the only birds in the UK which hum are the Female pop stars.

i'm not sure as I though the leaves were rounder and come of the stem differently to this. If it is Lonicera japonica it is a twining shrub that grows big so fine in a large garden.
I'm more inclined to think it is Himalayan honeysuckle or Leycesteria formosa.
But I may well be wrong.
