It was just that other foxgloves in the garden are on a single stem and any photos I looked up seemed the same and the leaves of this look larger and darker than others we have and we wondered if it could be a different variety or something closely related but another species.

It might be a different strain. Where I live, we grow them as winter annuals, usually the 'Foxy' strain, which normally gets multiple stems.
