I wonder if you are eluding to the old method of storing new potatoes where you take a large tin, place your potatoes inside and include dry soil or peat and bury them in the garden until Christmas.

If stored properly, they should last you 8 months at least. Remember those old root cellars from way back when? Cool, dark & dry. Also, don't let the potatoes touch each other when in storage. I suppose your basement could work too.

welcome to GoY.
they need to be kept cool and in the dark. paper bag or a hessian sack would be better as they are alive and will produce some water vapour. In a tin the water wont evaporate and they will 'sweat' and then rot.
Whether they will last to Xmas is dependent on their general health and variety.
hope this helps.
