Best compost to use when planting a hydrangea mophead in a pot? Is it John Innes no 3? Thanks.

Answers

for a mature plant as opposed to seedlings or young cutting yes I use JI no 3 as it is a soil based compost. I also find the soil types are less attractive to vine weevil, dries out slower and is heavier so the pot less likely to blow over.
It is much heavier so be careful when lifting it about.

Thanks Seaburngirl. I just found about half a bag of john innes no 3 knicking about and remembered I used it recently but it won't be enough for the whole pot so could I mix in some leaf mould and maybe multi purpose with it as well?

yes of course you can. It will help open the structure and as the leaf mould rots down it will release nutrients.
