Just wanted to say a big thankyou to those who have responded to my question. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the advice. I love daffs, and had not thought of planting so early - so that is a brilliant idea. I will dig on a "little and often" basis to remove some of the root. I have just read somewhere about a product called 6X which can be used instead of rotten manure and will not require as much brute strength. The "and ignorance" is a given!

Thank you everyone. And happy gardening.
