Hi
I have these two tomato plants (alacante) the are about a half size bigger than when I got them my question is should I remove the side shoots to promote groth?

That's quite correct. For Alicante, which is a cordon variety, then about 4 to 5 feet or 4 to 5 trusses before removing the tip. If it was a bush variety, then leave the side shoots on.

I usually do remove side shoots until they are about 4/5 ft tall then take the tip out. It may not be the way to do it but it always works for me.
