All green Pieris has variegated new growth. I'm not a gardener at all but have inherited a little Pieris bush which Iike very much. It has lovely glossy dark green leaves, with red new growth, but I've noticed a new branch coming from the base has variegated leaves.
I've found a couple of references online to variegated varieties 'reverting' to all green, but can't find anything to explain what I'm seeing and I'd love to know what's happening.

I wonder if it was originally a variegated variety but the previous owner hadn't pruned out the all green stuff. A dormant bud of the variegated form has started to grow and that is why you are seeing it now.
