I have a palm tree which seems to enjoy my south facing garden but I am concerned about protecting it through the snow and frost during the winter months. Any advice would be welcome.

It looks like a chusan palm, windmill palm - Trachycarpus Fortunei.
I bought my home in 2007 and it was a small 2' palm that was crowded and dwarfed by other bushes and trees. I have cleared many of the old bushes and trees away and this palm has grown to about 7'.
It has lovely green broad fan leaves and seems to love the south facing garden.. it is near a hedge which protects if from the wind. How can I protect it through the winter?
I am concerned because I lost a number of new shrubs last winter in the snow and frost.

You don't need to worry - Trachycarpus is fully hardy in this country - a client of mine has 3 in her garden, one in a pot, the others in the ground, and they all came through last winter entirely unharmed.

What kind of palm is it? Do you have a proper name for it? And how long has it been in your garden?
