Any recommendations? Starting to clean up the greenhouse and get ready for the growing season ahead. Can any member suggest a favourite compost? I know that the trend is for peat-free but the ones I have used last season tend to be full of rubbish and dry out so quickly and constant watering washes away any nutrients.

I tend to mix John Innes composts with my own leaf mould and perlite. I select the JI 1 for seedlings etc. like Owd I add slow release fertilizer when potting on small plants, but nor when I sow seeds.

My Melcourt peat free general purpose is absolutely fine, and I eke it out with Vermiculite. But I LOVE Westland’s Gro-Sure Seed and Cutting … it’s like velvet for handling. I add Vermiculite for seed- sowing and have better germination than with any other compost.

The Melcourt stuff is excellent, but the price!!!!!!!!Sheesh,
I use Jack's Magic but add a lot of my own leaf mould to it. That seems to keep the moisture in it. Feed a bit sooner than one used to. Say after 3 weeks instead of the usual 6 weeks for the nutrition in the compost to be used up.
