I would like to make a hedge fence feature from a row of 9 X 6ft high bare leyandii tree stumps using the existing, very fast growing ivy, growing up, between and around the stumps to make a dense screen. But I wonder how long the stumps will take to rot and potentially collapse. Would appreciate your advice. Many thanks. Anne from Croydon

Are they dead, Anne? Did you cut them so far back that there isn't any green left?

I would imagine that it would take some years for the actual roots and stumps to die. I hope your plan works well for you.

I wonder as they very slowly rot are you at risk of encouraging fungus to grow?

Years, is the answer to your question, although it may be ten years or less if you allow ivy to cover the trunks.

How do I say thanks?
