My ceanothus tree is over 10 years old

Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom

Tried to add a third photo but the webpage wasn’t having it.

I wrote to say that it now only flowers on the topmost branches. The lower ones are dry and brittle.
I tried adding a third photo but I lost the original message. GOY still isn’t working properly.

Hi Arbuthnot. We have a similar situation with ours. Ours is about 15 years old. Apparently they have a life span.
I trimmed a lot of 'deadwood' from the bottom a few weeks ago. I think we've decided to chop it down completely and start over perhaps? It's a tough one, but, it's looking like it's not going to shoot from the bottom.
It was floriferous again this year, at the top. The bottom is looking pretty rough now, sadly.

I’m tempted to chop mine too but only as far as the top of the fence as I like the thick branches at the bottom. It’s a real shame though as it’s such a beautiful tree. However it will mean that we will be able to sit in that corner without dead twigs and other bits falling on us. After we move that big tub though!

Ours in at the top of the rockery/bottom of the bund hill. I adore the bluish lilac flowers, they are vibrant in bloom.
I cam empathise in regards to the twigs and leaves. It is a real pity, you may get a bit longer before you prune it?
I’m sad to have to chop ours, I thought we could buy another, but OH says it’ll take several years to get going…I’m still considering it. 🤞

Arbuthnot, what a delightful corner! I would be loth to cut the tree down until it dies altogether! It must look lovely as you approach the corner when it's in bloom.
