I have had lots of stripped leaves but I have found a caterpillar infestation on my lilac, so many birds have been having a freebie.
I wonder if that is the reason for the damage to the leaves.
Lilac often has a 'year off' but have you pruned it this spring? I ask as if it needs pruning it should be after flowering.
