Please could someone identify this flower which has arrived mysteriously in our garden? Thanks :)

Thanks very much Hywel. I did wonder if it was Oregano because I tried to grow some in another part of the garden, but had thought that they’d only be a few inches tall. There doesn’t seem to be any smell from the leaves, but it is becoming thuggish! Do you use yours in cooking at all?

I don't use it in cooking Sheila, I only make plain simple things - like bread and cheese lol
Strange it hasn't got a smell ...

… maybe it would if it had the sun on it?

I thought it to be Marjoram, but having looked it up I see it is the same plant, Origanum vulgate, :-)

Maybe so Sheila but mine doesn't get a lot of sunshine because of the hedgerow trees opposite where it grows.
You have to run your fingers over the leaves to detect the smell. I pull my hand up through it as I pass, it's a nice smell.

Hi Sheila, this looks exactly like a plant I asked about only a couple of weeks ago, and the replies agreed. I have to say, it is starting to take over and spread a bit too much, so I will cut it back when it has finished flowering, and perhaps divide and move some to another area. It is worth having though as it is a real magnet for the bees.

Thank you Josee, Hywel (I’ll try the smell test again), and Numbers for your input 🙂.

I think it is Oregano, it looks like mine.
Has it got a nice smell when you brush your fingers on the leaves Sheila ?
Mine is growing out of a wall, I got it as a cutting from someone else who had it growing out of a wall.
I've also got some in a hanging basket - I think it gets thuggish in the ground.
