I have a small,finely gravelled area...would be suitable for some wild flowers+ poppies from seed.Wondering whether to sow the seed this September or leave it until next Spring?

I'd say eminently suitable, low in nutrition & free draining by the sounds of it.
Why not try both now & spring sowing?
The now one will settle in for early spring /summer flowers, if you get bare patches, or just fails, then another sowing in spring will fill in gaps plus give later flowers
