Does anyone know what type of palm-like plant this is? It arrived unannounced and is popping up all over my garden. The leaves have hard, sharp points. How do I get rid of it? I'm in Roodepoort, Gauteng, South Africa.

is it one of the Phoenix palms? ie Phoenix canariensis?

removal will be by digging it out. not sure how it spreads other than by birds dropping seed. So when digging get as many of the roots out as possible.
not sure what herbicides are available to you but that is also an option.

Hello Dewald,
I just was made aware of this post by a GoY member. I am the Palm GoYpedia editor.
It is in fact a Phoenix canariensis. You can dig them up or just cut them down to eradicate them. There must be large female trees in your area. The birds most likely carry the seeds to your area. P. canariensis seeds are extremely viable. It pops up here everywhere…even in asphalt.
Although, we have a major South American palm weevil infestation killing hundreds of thousands of P. canariensis now. Over 100,000 palms have been killed here in San Diego County, California since 2010. ☹️

There is a member on this site called Delonix1. He is an expert on Palms. You can send him a private message as I do not know if he is visiting the "question" page.
He lives in San Diego USA.
