I have a fanned conference pear tree planted in the ground three years ago. Last year we had one pear in good condition but this year I had about 30 pears all looking good, odd one falling off, I picked them when ripe and firm but they were all soft and brown inside within days, all had to be thrown away. Any one with ideas why. I live in East Sussex

I think that you need to pick the pears while they are still hard and ripen them off indoors. Unfortunately pears seem to be hard... hard... ripe, rotten! Better luck next year!

It is said to be a good keeper as a pear, but I can't say that the gardener growing fruit can keep pears as well as a commercial grower does. A lot of pears go brown in the middle if you wait too long before eating them. My pears have always tended to do this. Just came back from 9 days away and the ones kept indoors were all squishy! I picked them all before we left. The Concordes were outside in a box on the bench undercover...they are ok. Apples are delicious after a frost from my older ballerinas
