I've shredded up a lot of summer bedding and I 'd like to use the shreddings now as a mulch on an asparagus bed. is this wise or would it be better to compost ? Advice please!

yes I would compost it first too. better nutrient availability for your asparagus.

There may well be mixed seeds in it so composting is best.
