Well there is the odd really pickly plant that they wont go near - for example Aciphylla but you would not want that in the same garden as small children lol

Okay let's start looking at options. I am not aware of any plant that will 'deter' cats. However, cats like to defecate in open ground. If you keep your ground planted up they will not use as a toilet. If you have ground that needs to be bare cover with something like bark (NOT composted bark) or a good layer or grit/gravel. If you are actually trying to prevent cats entering your garden at all well... good luck, getting your own cat is possibly the best solution.

My (now deceased) cat never went into the cactus garden. Unfortunately, I couldn't say the same of the gophers!

Shrimp, read my message above it is a half hardy perennial, meaning it will need to be protected in winter. Mind you I doubt it will keep the cats at bay and certainly not over the winter.

Not sure of that one, but I have heard that Coleus canina will do the trick.
