how do I prune arum lily before planting, purchased from garden centre not looking too good

This is an herbaceous perennial, meaning that it dies down to the roots in winter. So you can cut off any dead leaves now and it will resprout in spring.

Errr - to qualify Volunteer's advice, there's only one hardy one in the UK - Zantedeschia aethiopica 'Crowborough'. This has white flowers. All the others need to be taken into a frost-free place and allowed to die back and dry out, then started back into growth in the spring.
