ROSES STILL FLOWERING - There is a small flower garden at my offices in the centre of a 'C shaped' building - 3 storey brick but a good 20m square open area out to an open end in the West. How on earth are the roses still flowering and what look like fresh new buds coming through? (see photo) I took this photo on Wednesday and we've had at least three frosts so far, crazy. Location: Shrivenham, Swindon.

It's more of a general question as if there's a secret I'm going to plant roses in my garden all year round!! Jez

I have several roses in flower at the moment.(North Cambridgeshire) Most are quite frost tolerant and some can flower as late as mid December.

A lot of mine flower until the temperatures drop to below freezing. I had blooms until the end of last week when the temps dropped to -12C and lower. Some are hardier than others. The Hybrid Teas generally stop flowering before the Floribundas and shrub roses.

Yes I find the shrub roses flower the longest

We have to prune our roses while they are still blooming in January, usually after several frosts. The biggest and best blooms come on then, so our equipment includes a large vase, for the flowers, and a box of tissues, for the tears! ; )

What's contributing to their good flowering at this time of year, though, is the fact they're backed by a C shaped building, which appears to be wood clad in parts, and that the open end is west facing - were that north or east facing, or the building behind wasn't C shaped, then the flowering would be affected more quickly when the temperature falls or the north wind, she doth blow...

Glad you've decided on roses Jez. There's nothing better in my opinion....but then I'm a bit biased having so many.

My grandafther was a champion rose grower but he was imo obsessed with them allowing nothing else into his garden.

I treat roses as a highly valued plant but I grow them in mixed borders. Carefully chosen, you can have roses in flower for maybe 6-7 months of the year.

I much prefer my roses in mixed beds Anchorman. Apart from the looks of them with other flowers (which I prefer), I think the plants end up being much healthier. I have one bed with just roses (11 of them), the rest are all in mixed borders. The ones in mixed borders have fewer aphids, sawfly larva and other insects.

How do I say thanks?
