i have had an olive tree in a large pot for about 5years now and this year i have noticed that alot of its leaves are falling. is this due to the cold ,i ve had the pot and root protected can you advise

Yes, it'll be the cold we've experienced causing this. Nothing you can do now, wait till spring and if there's been dieback of some of the branches, cut back to live wood.
