I set mine towards the end of March, plenty off time if you don't want leggy plants.

i would say it depends on where you are going to grow them eventually, if you are going to grow them as greenhouse crops, then starting them now with a little bottom heat, say 15 deg is good, but if they are for outside growing i would wait until march to sow them

Even if the toms are going to be grown in a greenhouse I would not start them yet. Much better as Tulsalady says to wait until March otherwise you run the risk or leggy plants.

moon growe has it right unless you have so much money that you want to heat the greenhouse till September..

lol Oldsparky... Dalc we all want to start growing and sowing but the reality is it is too soon. Get on with making sure your veggie plots are all dug over and ready AND make sure your greenhouse and potting shed are totally cleaned up so there is no risk of pests or diseases. Set you seed potatoes to chit and plan what you are going to grow where, remembering the 4 year rotation rule!

You need to work out what you want to grow. If you put a packet of seeds in now with bottom heat they will soon grow. Then you pot them on, but they need a heated greenhouse to grow in. You may get a large number from a packet of seeds, it often states on the packet say 20 when you only need 6, which can be grown in a pot on the kitchen window sill now, sow a few more seeds in 2 weeks time to have a rotation.
