Are supermarket bought potted herbs worth buying ? Will they establish on a kitchen windowsill, or are they grown for short term use ?

Supermarket herbs are perfect to grow on LD.
( whispering now ) I used to work in a rip-off garden centre belonging to a big co-operative with arrogant management. A coach party of smashing oap's visited in the afternoon & one lady was standing alone in the herb section looking at a 6" bowl of mixed herbs, three small plants in all priced £14.99 ?!?!? disgusting I know !
Anyway she said it looked nice but was too expensive & really only wanted a parsley. So I said "keep it to yourself but for 75p you can get perfectly good rooted herbs at your local supermarket. We had a laugh, she said thankyou & she will do just that. My work was done. One up to us & one down to rip-off Britain. I left after 3 months, loved the work & customers, but the management - - - whew !! boy did they need some training in PR. LOL

I agree. Last year I filled a herb bed from the supermarket when I found potted herbs on offer 2 for £1.
They all did brilliantly and I'll replace the annuals the same way this year.

Bampy that was fantastic and very true.I always buy mine from the supermarket usually Aldi, they have great bargains in plants. At the moment on my kitchen windowsill i've got chives and parsley, still going strong after 2yrs, i think they cost about 70p at the time.So Lemondrop I would say go for it you can't go wrong.

Wish there were more honest people around like you Bampy and don't get me started on management ! Do they need a particular kind of feed ?

Herbs in the wild grow in the poorest soil you can imagine Lemondrop so they only need watering and not too much. Our basil that we grew from seed last spring is still on the kitchen windowsill - a first for getting one through the winter.

Bampy good for you! I hate the rip off of three small herbs in a fancy pot and a sky high price!

thanks for the tip MG, I grow basil alongside the toms every year but never considered it would grow through the winter. It's my favourite herb bar non so will try a couple on the kitchen w/sill this autumn.
