Bareroot plants are plants from the nursery supplying them which are not growing in pots. The roots will be wrapped in burlap or maybe clingwrap nowadays but you will not get soil. If you go to a garden centre and visit the hedging section you should see bundles of 'bareroot plants' maybe 10 together. It is cheaper to buy bareroot plants which must be planted as soon after buying as possible or they will die. If the weather is not suitable for planting then heel the plants in by digging a hole big enough to take all the roots and plant them there until you are ready to plant them in their permanent home. I have noticed some GC's are now planting 10 bushes in a pot for hedging presumably to save you that heeling in process if the ground is frozen when you buy them. The other way to buy plants is 'pot grown' which can be transferred to your garden regardless of the season.

The planting season for bare root plants is November - March, so if you're going to plant this year you need to get on with it! Bare root plants are a fraction of the price of pot grown plants. Not surprisingly you get a better selection of plants available earlier in the season as suppliers are trying not to have stock left on their hands at the end of the planting season.

I've seen bare root trees and hedging available in one of our local garden centres, heeled into a big tub, or suppliers are easily found on t'internet. PM me if you have any trouble finding one.
