Hi Julia and welcome to GoY, you can but might take a while to compost down.

I put them in - if there are bits that are still identifiable (for example, corn on the cob middles take ages to break down) when you come to empty the bin, just take them out and either put into the bin that you're about to leave alone to decompose - if you have more than one, or put them back into the bin you're about to start filling.
