are they harming your tree, maybe you can identify them to see if they are a pest or even butterflies

I wouldn't try to get rid of them as they are probably not doing any harm. I am surprised that caterpillars are active at this time of year in the UK, though. They will either provide food for the birds or be killed by the next hard frost.
