Mystery plant - help needed

United Kingdom

We're looking for some knowledge to help us identiify a plant.

We bought this plant from the Tatton Park Flower Show when they sold them off at the end. We loved the dark foliage, but I don't think we've ever known what it is.

We've had it about 3 years and it's planted in a very sunny border. It is very 'sensitive', very affected by drying out too much and if the leaves are knocked when young they will go incredibly dry and crumble.
It's just flowering now ( see photo ), it has an very strong lovely scent.

Any help would be appreciated.

It used to be called Cimicifuga, but I think it may have a new name now. Or Bogbane. The picture I think is of Cimicifuga simplex brunette.

You're right Wyeboy - cimicifuga is now actaea, so it is actaea simplex 'Brunette'

Beat me to it. Wish we could grow it.

I wonder why they had to change the name.Acteas are not so attractive as Cimiciflugas, except when they get their wonderful berries in late summer.

That's great, thank you to Wyeboy, Andrewr and Owdboggy for your time and input.

I think we'll move it now I know it's meant for light shade and a moist soil, rather than the full sun clay soil it's struggling in.

How do I say thanks?
