my cordyline palm tree was wonderful i have had it growing in my front garden for 12 years no problemat all but ay the moment it looks very sick it has blackened on the trunk roughly up to ametre and some ouzy sap is also showing on the trunk .The foliage is also looking limp other smaller palms in the local area have lost all their leafiness please is there anything i can do or is it past helping .Ann

Thousands of cordylines have been affected this year, mature or otherwise - the fact its oozing isn't good. You don't say where on the trunk this is occurring, but wait till April, have a look again. If the oozing has got worse, or the trunk is actually rotting, cut down beyond that point. If its no worse, and if you can bear to, wait till May or June - it may yet produce new growth partway up the trunk, or from the base and when it does, cut back to that.
