I would like to dig up and replant a large, low spreading conifer asap. Is this possible at this time of year and what is the best way to go about it?

yes it is possible but you are not sure of success. dig as big a rootball up as you can. then move to the new site where the hole should be bigger than the root ball you have lifted. make sure the planting hole is well dug and enriched with leaf mould/compost. put the tree in to the same depth as it has come from. firm down as you back fill and make sure you water well. even if it rains it will need plenty of water for several months.
