Can you recommend an evergreen plant that grows to about one/two metres in confined root space

Rhododendrons and Camellias are the obvious choice as they have fairly compact root systems. You would need acid soil or ericaceous compost though, and choose the variety carefully to get the right size plant. You could also go for Yew as it can be clipped and kept smaller in that way.

If you have a sheltered spot and feel adventurous, a small fig might be successful - they fruit better in confined root runs and I think I have seen a variety suitable for a patio pot, so it would not get too big.

Umm..I think Allsone said evergreen, Steragram.

Various dwarf conifers will fit, such as 'Compressa', 'Blue Point', or 'Robusta Green' Junipers, some yew varieties, Dwarf Alberta Spruce, but they will be slow. Euonymus japonicus 'Green Spire'. Maybe a Nandina, too?

..or how about a bamboo? If it's roots are confined it won't roam around.
