A sunken (largish) hole in the topsoil where turf will be laid...and wondering if just filling with more topsoil will be sufficient. I am waiting for the gardeners to get back in touch with me to arrange for the turf but I am concerned that when they were here in Dec. to do the patio they also dug (with a small digger) quite a deep hole and filled it with garden waste and quite a few inches of topsoil. Over the winter this has compacted down and there is an obvious indent now. Any suggestions appreciated about how to tackle the problem and the gardeners. The last thing I want is to have a sinking section of lawn! Thanks muchly.

If the garden waste was only dumped in December it won't have started rotting down yet. As the soil gets warmer and the waste does start to rot it will sink further! Is it possible to take the waste out and refill the hole with soil? Is the hole large enough to bury the gardeners as well ;-).

They took most of the garden waste away in the skip but still buried some, Bjs. I would judge the hole to be 5 feet in diameter and approx. 3 feet deep. Now about 6" has sunk. I regret not tackling them at the time and insisting they remove ALL the garden waste. Hindsight eh? Ugh! Thanks for your reply Bjs.

Now Bulbaholic....that has brought a smile to my face :) lol I'd sure like to bury them! At first they were going to bury all the bits of asbestos sheeting that had been holding up the old fencing in places (put there by the previous owner!). I talked them out of that and hubby wrapped it all up in plastic and took by appt. to the tip.
I'm not sure about taking out the waste they've put in there...I could tackle them (if they do return my calls about the turfing!!!) and tell them I want it removed. I hate confrontation so it won't be an easy task for me!
No use getting a bad job though...they charge enough £££.

Oh Whistonlass, you have my sympathy - you know you should have listened to your gut instinct at the time and tackled them then, but sometimes it's just too much of an effort, isn't it. I am confrontational, but it's always an effort, requiring lots of energy, and not even pleasant to do. I often feel as if I'm constantly dragging resistant boulders up hills, and all because people don't do their jobs properly, or avoid responsibility. Very tiresome.

No matter what they charge, Whistonlass, they are cowboys. Disposing of asbestos by any means other than taking it to a properly licenced site has been ILLEGAL for several years now. No reputable company would suggest burying it in your garden.

Sadly there are far too many cowboys out there masquerading as gardeners and garden designers. Which is a huge shame as there are also very good gardeners/garden designers. How to tell the difference -ask for references and take them up - even go and visit other gardens they have worked on. If they are good at their job they will not be at all bothered by your doing this. Good luck Whistonlass.

how about doing the opposit and digging more out and have a nice big pond .

NP....it looks big enough for a pond alright but I am too wary with young grandchildren who are looking forward to nana and grandpa having a garden they can actually play in. I do plan a small water feature (solar) in a rockery though.
The workmen are being very silent....I've had 4 calls to them in the last week and none have been returned! I'm not only impatient now....I'm getting angry. MG mentioned "cowboys" and I reckon as far as landscaping (they did our fencing and the patio which are done well) they are not so professional.

OH Groan! Poor you Jacqui, I am sick fed up of trying to find decent, reliable, conscientious trades people. It's incredible to think that they can come up with burying asbestos in your garden and then leaving all that rubbish in your lovely garden. Ugh! Really sympathise with you as I also detest confrontations. It looks like you will either have to dig it all out again somehow OR put up with a dent. What is wrong with people these days? Makes my head sore and my heart ache! Hope you find someone more helpful soon......:(((((

We decided to go out to the shops today and came home to find a phone message and a card through our door to say the turf guy had been in touch. I've phoned their number and left another message....so it's a waiting game.
I am going to get up my "bold self" (haha) and speak to him when he comes to look at the garden to measure for turf etc. Hubby and I are both convinced the rubbish he buried needs removing and it's HIS responsibility to make the soil levels even once the garden rubbish is removed!
Thanks for your understanding, Karen. I'll write a blog soon and update with all the happenings/developments!

you could do a shallow natural pond that the kids could look for frogs etc in as long as you watched them .

There's a plan developing here, MG....will update asap.

Look forward to hearing the latest news... Don't give up what ever you do!

Well...still no return phone calls since the fellow left his messages the day we were out!
And the newest development....hubby and I have spent some time today considering not having turf! We're thinking pebbles/rockery etc. We're undecided as yet but I've put up another question about gravel gardens for feedback and have been looking at gravel garden ideas and rockeries on GoyPedia today. Nothing like making a decision more complicated!

Gosh... all change!

you don't say how big the hole was or how much went in.certainly add some more top soil but be prepared to level a number more times after the turf is laid, don't let it sink to much before you rake over another layer of soil then the grass will quickly grow through,
.
the bottom line is it was not a good idea to bury waste, the tip would have been a lot better and cheaper in the long run.
