You haven't said whether your Vitis is ornamental or you're growing a grape fruiting variety - care for grape growing is different, but if you are growing it for ornamental purposes, needs free draining soil, is not self clinging, but a tendril climber, so requires thin supports (like clematis), presence of chalk in the soil is beneficial, thrives in sun or partial shade. Cut back unwanted growth in summer, keep watered during dry spells in its first year or two.
