I have a patch of soil outside my front door which gets morning sun but no shelter , about 3ftx2ft. I would like to plant something inexpensive , low maintenance and evergreen that will spread and ground cover the area , any ideas please?

Hi Rachel, Welcome to GoY! What about a low growing Leucothoe, or Heather, or Bugle (Ajuga). Dwarf Rhododendron? You don't say how tall you want it to be Rachel....and it would be useful to know what kind of soil we have here and how much frost you tend to get.....

Hi Rachel, hebe is a good do-er it might even keep its blossom all winter if your lucky! and you can prune it to keep it small, also something usefull like rosemary or lavender or as Karen suggested heather looks lovely just about all year as well.

Personally I'd pop in two or three heather plants and let them colonise BUT they will need to be clipped back or they will get leggy.

Campanula muralis. Unless you want a bit more height, in which case, Leucothoe, though this prefers slightly acidic soil.
