I have planted shallots ,rhubarb and onions out in my garden today does anyone think this is two early. I live in north east england near redcar.

You could put some horticultural fleece over them if you're worried.

thanks for your advice did i plant my onions too early.i will follwow the fleece suggestion ,should the weather take a turn for the worst.

I think the onions and shallots should be OK, but keep your eye on them because the birds tend to pull them out and leave them on top of the soil - you may find you need to replant some of them until they get well rooted. There should be no problem with the rhubarb. But I am going on the weather here in south west Wales, which is milder than where you are. All you can do really is to wait and see if they take - the fleece is a good idea, and will also keep the birds off.

thanks steragram,i will keep a careful eye onthings .i read on another gardening site that onions tend to pop out if the soil in which they were planted is not loose ,apparrently a trowel should be used ,not a dibble,if a dibble is used the roots tend to push the onion out.the poor birds are getting the blame when most of the time it is not them.

We won't be planting anything before the end of the month. Can't even get on the ground at the moment because of the b. weather :-(
