I am growing some veg and salad in large troughs this year, I want to know what growing medium to use. Multi Purpose compost or something else or a mixture???

Id buy a few grow bags and tip the contents into your troughs and mix in some garden compost if you have any. Ive grown mixed salad leaves like that, oh and some leeks and parsnip.
