when and how do i grow clematis from seed?

Sow the seed in pots or trays (depending on how many seeds you have) of seed compost. They are reasonable sized seeds so you can place them about an inch apart. Cover with 2-3mm compost and then a layer of vermiculite or fine grit. This discourages the growth of moss as the seeds may take a year to sprout. I've just pricked out a tray of C. viticella that was sown almost a year ago! These were kept in a greenhouse but you could also keep them outside in a sheltered spot.
p.s. I had fished around in the compost in late summer to see if anything was happening and the root had grown out of the seeds but the shoots took until early spring to show themselves!! Patience is needed.
