I have the stump of an old elderberry tree which I would like to get out. The wood is terribly hard and I remember years ago my Dad putting something on old tree stumps to rot them and then they could be easily removed. Unfortunatly my Dad is not here anymore so wondered if anyone else could help.

Saltpeter ("Stump Remover") is supposed to soften the stump over a period of 3 months to a year when put into holes in the stump, and kept moist, but I have had mixed results with that.

There are brushwood killers for poisoning tree stumps so that they don't grow again, but these don't actually rot the stump - the stump rots over time on its own because it's dead. You don't say whether the stump is alive or dead, but your other alternative is to ring a tree surgeon and ask him to send someone round with a stump grinding machine to grind it out.
