I was in my garden this morning and saw what looked like smoke coming from what I think is a fir tree, at closer inspection it seemed to be coming from the buds. What is it that I was seeing?

It sounds just ike Owdboggy has said. I remember the first time I saw something like that. I actually thought what I saw was quite cool, it was on a large scale, like a cloud.

Pollen. Conifers are wind pollinated.
