I would love to try growing a small plum tree in a large pot on west facing patio. I have been recommended to get an Opal or Victoria. Has anyone any suggestions / favourites / hints or words of advice please

It may also need a pollinator nearby or you'll get no fruit. Some varieties are self-pollinating so buy from a reputable grower who knows their stuff, like Ken Muir.

My words of advice are not about the variety of plum you choose, but the rootstock its growing on - pick a dwarf rootstock. This may or may not limit the varieties available in that form, you'll have to check. The pot needs to be a minimum of 12 inches wide and deep, more if possible. Only other thing is plums like full sun - west facing means afternoon sun only. Use John Innes No. 2 or 3 as the growing medium.
