Lime Tree query

We have a massive Lime Tree in our rear garden, which is subject to a preservation order. On cutting back the base shoots recently I noticed what has the appearance of an off white plastic bottle base pushed inside a hole in the trunk, and it is really hidden almost at the very bottom of the base, which is why I probably haven't seen it before. I had a little prod and tap but it sounds nothing like plastic and I have absolutely no idea what this thing is, it cannot be prised out either. Is there anything this could possibly be?

Do you think that it could be a plastic bottle? Maybe someone naughty and smaller than an adult pushed it in there?
p.s. Do you live in East Grinstead? There is a massive lime tree in a garden near me.
