can a lavender tree survive if grown in a large pot and what kind of soil do I need for this?

I presume you mean a Lavender standard? With a stem?

No matter, they are short lived shrubs with around 4-6 years of looking good before becoming woody and leggy.

A soil based compost is always best for Lavender. John Innes No.2 is fine. Make sure you site your lavender in full sun too and don't keep it constantly sopping wet if in a very large container.

Rule of thumb: good soak and let the surface of the compost dry off before watering again.
