Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere naturally reacts with water (rain) to give carbonic acid in a very weak form. This rain then falls on the soil to acidify it.
Carbon dioxide has always been in the atmosphere and, in itself, is not a problem. The, so called, acid rains occur because of the nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide added to the atmosphere by our fume emmisions.
