Is it good practice to deadhead daffodils after flowering or will this affect the ability to flower next year?

Dead heading helps it to flower next year and to build up the bulb for next year and also let all the foliage die down before you remove it

I cut the flower stems right down rather than just deadheading as the deadheaded stems look a bit forlorn - is this OK?

yes it is bernard. I actaully take the stalk out too, stops the stiff little beggars spoiling the 'view' haha.

no deadheading helps the plant build a new flower for next year. when you have dead headed you can feed them too. all this will help next years flowers form. after about 6-8 weeks you can take off the folliage.
