My first time of making leaf mould and it smells like a farmyard (good), but there are many light brown larvae in there - are they likely to be bad?

Thanks so much John - only 2 years too late! I am slow at learning to find my way around the site, but getting there.

Any chance of posting a picture Sheila? By the time you use the leaf mould they will have matured and be gone so it is doubtful that they will do any harm to the plants you grow where the leaf mould is. But nearly all larvae that live in leaf mould are light brown so it is impossible to say really.
If you can't put up a photo then have a look at this.

Most larvae are beneficial at breaking the leaves down so if yours aren't here (there are only 4 on this site) and you can't find them by typing 'larvae in leaf mould' into Google or Ask, then I wouldn't worry too much.
