We won't be planting ours until May.

I was going to say the same - it's easy to have plants like beans, that are quick to start growing, ready to put out before the weather is reliably warm enough. Plant them in May and they'll soon be flowering.

If you can't wait until May try growing them in mini greenhouses made from empty Coke bottles - works a treat, though they look funny round the bottom of the canes! Cut the bottoms off, and leave the tops off for ventilation.
