I want to add a screen across a lawn to separate the garden half belongs to e and half to upstairs. I don't want to put up a fence and need to use something that will let some light in. The garden is fairly shady particularly in summer. I was going to use bamboo but am worried about taking over, I want something that is thin but grows tallish. Have you any suggestions.
Thanks David

Posts with chain loops? You can get low wire fencing with loopy tops in rolls - it doesn't need much support. I think it's called border fencing. I've seen a "movable" hedge made of a line of plants in pots.
Like Louise, I would also advise that bamboo would not be a good choice.

« We have ( what we think ) a downy birch in the garden, it's 'little fluffy...
Perhaps Cotoneaster horizontalis - you can train this shrub by pruning and several of these would form the type of screen you're after.
You could also try shrub roses planted in a straight line, that wouldn't be too dense.
A line of ornamental grasses would look nice (various types and heights).
Lavenders and rosemarys also, euonymus aswell.
Arundinaria is as you thought - you'll be forever battling with it because it's such a strong grower.
