Supermarket plants.

Sorry - looked to see if this was covered already but couldnt find anything.

Im guilty of impulse buying 3 plants from the supermarket today - a Solanum glasnevin and 2 Clematis - a Mr President and an Ashra. I know its not the best place to source plants but I was thinking about plants to hide some fencing and before I knew it they had jumped into the basket.....

Any advice prior to planting these ? eg should I harden them off for a week or so ?

yes I would certainly harden them off as they will have been in a warm store for at least a few days. They will also need a good watering too.

Thanks Sbg - in fairness they were in good nick and quite moist. The lady at the self-service tills was saying that she was a keen gardener and she made sure that the plants were well looked after.

Either way its outside during the day and in the shed at night in the next week or so for them.

I have found that the best time to buy supermarket plants is in the morning when they are first brought out I work for tesco and we got 24 petunias for £3 also with 10% staff discount as well better than any garden centre prices.

I call it the greenhouse hokey cokey in my case. :o)

a couple of weeks should be fine. as they arent half hardy annulas. I feel sorry for al those people who have been buying and more to the point planting annuals out this week. it is a total waste of money as I'd be amazed if we didnt get any more frosts this and next month.
