Hello I have just bought Weigelia floida bristol ruby, ribes sanguineum and escallonia donard seeding. Can you tell me if they can be planted in a container or do they have to go into the ground?

I had a Bristol ruby in a pot but it didn't do very well. I put it into the garden and it is now about 5' foot high and flowers profusely during the summer. It is much happier in the garden than it ever was in the pot.

all should really be in the ground, but you can certainly keep them in pots for 2 or 3 years. the one that really won't like a pot too much is Escallonia - can be a bit tender in the winter, and in a pot, more so.
