Could anyone please tell me of some hardy plants that do not need much watering:)))
I ask this because it is for my mums grave and it is looking rather bad at the moment and i would like to make it really nice for my mum.The plants i put there have died because of the lack of rain and they havent been watered and i can only get there once a fortnight.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. One more thing the soil is stoney and clayey should i remove the top 6 inches and replace it with better soil or compost. Thanks mark

Hi Mark,
I agree with Steragram, and think that both improving the soil and adding the water retaining granules will help. Small plants like saxifrage will look pretty and not need too much water once they are established, but cannot afford to dry out before they are properly settled. We certainly have had a very long dry spell recently. Hope it all works out ok for you.

Improving the soil would probably help - adding some grit and compost and removing as many of the stones as you have time for would make a big difference. You could also consider mixing in some of the gel crystals that are designed for tubs and pots. I had a very dry corner where even tough perennial geraniums wilted but adding the crystals make a big difference - if you water well when you can they will hold some moisture for a lot longer than the soil on its own will do. I think others will have some plant suggestions. I can'think of any that would be neat and flower all summer except perennial geraniums, but you would have to be careful about the variety as not all flower for a long time and some prefer shade.
