I have an acer which has started growing a limb from the original root. How do I remove it and keep it alive??

If it is a grafted Acer and the shoot is coming from below the graft tear/pull rather than cut off and get rid of.

It's just occurred to me you might mean you want to keep the new 'limb' alive - you can't without some root with it.
